Creating space for your soul to breathe so you can discern your next right thing.

84: A Beginner’s Guide to Self-Reflection

Today I’m re-visiting a topic I’ve covered a few times during the life of this podcast and I guarantee I’ll be covering it again because it’s based on a spiritual practice that has changed my life and, I believe if you practice it regularly, will change yours as well.

What is that spiritual practice? It’s the practice of intentional reflection and today I’ll take you through it one step at a time.

My husband and I listen to you every week (by the way we are in our late sixties). We just started about two months ago and we haven’t gone back to your first episodes yet, though when you reference one in a current podcast we do. We thoroughly enjoy what you have to share and this episode was especially meaningful and helpful. Glenn is a semi retired pastor who has led Silent Retreats over the years. He will use topics from this episode to guide participants in learning from their lives. Thank you so much for your study and for sharing with us. God has gifted you in extraordinary ways and we are grateful.

I agree with the comment above. You are beautifully gifted by God for this ministry and I find your podcast extremely quieting and helpful. I’ve had a little training in the contemplative way and hoped to become a spiritual director myself.
I am just through four years of mind-numbing anesthetics with multiple surgeries. I feel that my mind is just now becoming clearer and the effects of these surgeries are beginning to recede. One time I remember waiting to be discharged and crying over that week’s episode, trying to look ahead with hope when yet another, different physical problem had mysteriously blocked my path. Through these years I’ve returned again and again to the calm of your voice, the thoughts you weave together and the pause of being content to consider the next right thing. I’ve also recommended you to many. Thank you, Emily.

Upon finding your podcast I realized I’ve searched for it for most of my life. Your gentle voice, the content of each episode – even the music – are conducive to reflecting and making space for my soul. It’s in the listening, reflecting, journaling and praying that I’m beginning to feel whole. Your podcast is my safe space. I’m starting to breathe again. Thank you ?

Hi Emily! Been listening for a while and thoroughly enjoyed your book – so helpful for a decision-making avoider like myself!
Just curious what journal you use, the one referenced in this podcast (for to-do lists, jotting down quotes and ideas, daily tasks etc). I’m always on the lookout for tools to help organize my thoughts and life. Thanks for your time- Jen 🙂
