Creating space for your soul to breathe so you can discern your next right thing.

30: Hold One Thing At A Time

The way we move through our days is probably a lot more instinctual than we care to admit. We like to think we have clear reasons for things when in fact, most times we are feeling our way through.

Do I feel safe? Do I feel seen? Do I feel heard? Do I feel in control? Do I have what it takes?

On the surface, the decision could be as simple as deciding to join the PTA or not join the PTA. But deeper down and further in, it isn’t always quite so clear cut.

Today rather than tell you one of my own stories or the story of someone who has inspired me, I want to guide you through telling yourself your story, particularly as it relates to a decision you’re carrying.

Oh Emily! Your podcasts make my soul come alive, every Tuesday! This one especially resonated with me, because as a counselor, I hear people all the time saying, “We can’t rely on our emotions, we must have logic.” And yes, there’s some truth to that, but to intentionally focus in on how we feel about certain things seems tantamount. I’m about to print off your guide, and I anticipate it being very helpful both in my own life, and my clients. THANKS!

I really enjoyed this episode! I’ve been frustrated with myself for not taking time to think and pray through my priorities. I think this is a way I can do that! Xo

This was medicine and vitamins! How had I never heard of decision fatigue? Maybe I have and it never resonated like today when I listened to your podcast. I have to tell you this whole thing was from God. First, I was thumbing through Insta last night and I saw your story where you talked about this episode and I thought, “I didn’t know Emily had a podcast … hmmm, maybe I’ll check that out.” Then, this morning a woman whom I respect posted in our writers’ group that we should listen to (you guessed it!) your podcast. So, at the gym tonight, you were the podcast of choice for my time on the treadmill. I have literally been in overwhelm mode for about three weeks straight over a few decisions. I picked the dream one because it is the one that keeps me doing piddly things to avoid facing it. I can’t even tell you how much God used your soothing voice, your precious spirit of encouragement and this message to move me forward. I’m so grateful!!

Will the decision guide be emailed to us when we subscribe or when it be released on the website?
My husband and I recently listened to the last portion of this podcast and we LOVED the structural questions to guide! We just also need a visual (we aren’t very good auditory learners, I guess).
Thank you for all you do! The podcast as whole just speaks volumes to our lives!

This may have been your “longest episode yet” but I replayed it immediately after I’d finished. I’ve been so attuned to the logical part of me for so long, to be given permission to stop and think about how a decision makes me feel was a huge step (my decision involves a “dream” 🙂 ). Thank you for this! Now to figure out who to tell about my dream and see if it can become a reality after all…

I read “I Told Me So” last year. Twice. I learned so much! And like you, I loved the title. I’m glad you mentioned it here because many need to heed the book’s wisdom. Awesome again. God bless you as you live in his kingdom!

Thank you so much for this breath of fresh air! This season my husband and I have focused more on giving ourselves permission to do things we truly want and that would bring us joy. Your podcast couldn’t have confirmed this more. When making a decision, I usually base it on “what’s the right/Christian thing to do,” “what would God want me to do,” “what others would do/want me to do,” etc. I usually don’t ask myself what I want to do!

I had never paid special attention to scripture when Jesus asks the man “Do YOU WANT to be healed?” ..So powerful! So freeing!

Okay, I choose deadline and found a huge Ahh Haa via your help! So I took it out a bit far and wrote down 4 years of deadlines. ( my goal is to quit my day job and just write fiction) and I’d never mapped how that could happen. Then I listened for the rise and fall of my soul. It was BOTH. Ugg so I got out my journal and asked Jesus about the fall. He said, the fall has to do with the disappointment I feel when I can’t make perfect deadline ( and I’m self published-weirdo) He said I carry an over responsibility even to myself. What if I gave that to Him and he controlled the outcomes ( thanks Simple Tuesday). Wow all soul rise!!! Whoo hoo

I’m a bit behind on listening to the podcasts, but I’m always amazed at the timing of things when I do. Today’s was great for helping me with a daily decision – I’ve just been diagnosed with a condition that helps explain all sorts of things, including how difficult it is for me to make some decisions. I, too, love the soothing sound of your voice, and also the pace at which you deliver your podcasts and the space you give us to think and respond to God. Thank you for listening carefully to God and coming alongside us in that same quest.

I have a decision to make with deadline in place, and thought I’d made it. But woke up with cold feet and feeling so heavy about it. This simple exercise has helped me give myself permission to choose a different outcome, and thereby honor what’s inside that’s holding me back. Ahhh…Thank you, Emily!!!!
