“I hate the idea that someone out there hates me. I even hate that Al-Qaeda hates me. I think if they got to know me, they wouldn’t hate me.” – Pam Beesly, The Office
Let’s talk about how to walk into a room.
Maybe that seems weird but when it comes to relating with people, whether it’s family or strangers, how we enter a room can mean the difference between connecting with them or comparing ourselves to them.
Fair warning, today’s episode is brought to you by some healthy self-reflection and a dash of narcisism. It’s for a good cause. I hope you’ll hang with me.

Hi, Emily! All of your episodes are an absolute delight – a breathe of fresh air, a moment to pause and listen. This episode? I was on a morning run, and your words brought tears to my eyes when you were sharing all the ways that we are free. Free to dream big and small, free to lead the pack or from the back. THANK YOU for giving words to my fears and for giving life to a way forward – in freedom and grace and mercy and abundance.
You’re the best. You are providing such important content and reminders and gentle care in this busy world of chaos and comparison and insecurity.
Thank you! This struck such a chord with me, I am going through multiple new things and feeling left out / not belonging. At 56, I never thought I would be feeling like this again! Your podcast was exactly what I needed to hear, I don’t think of myself as a narcissist but realizing that all these thoughts about how I don’t fit, don’t know these new things etc. is exactly that! Ouch! ? thank you and God bless!
Wow! “You can connect or compare but you can’t do both!” Thank you so much for this. As I prepare to go to a week-long writing conference I will not forget these words. I belong because I am in Christ.
Simply amazing prayer!
Omgosh just found you through Lydia Senn. Best podcast ever!!
(I am still catching up on your podcasts!)
Two things I want to take from this: It’s okay – and maybe even good – that I always come back to the same truths; and choose to connect instead of compare. I want to practice that with my daughters today.
