Creating space for your soul to breathe so you can discern your next right thing.

10: Be Where You Are

After my first (and only) cruise experience with my family, I decided I prefer my vacations on land rather than on sea. Water for as far as the eye can see? Walking sideways through narrow hallways? Water glasses sliding across the dinner table? No thank you.

While I was on the ship I was tempted to fight against the movement, but there was nothing I could do to make it stop. Since I couldn’t change it, I had to learn to make peace with it, at least for the week.

Yesterday morning I had plans to record this episode first thing in the morning only to wake up to find my computer charger wasn’t working and our car wouldn’t start. The day continued like that, one thing right after the next, making my already long list of things to do even longer, forcing priorities I hadn’t planned and wish could change.

In today’s episode, I’ll share one action and one question to help you make peace with the activity in your own life, giving a bit of space to consider your next right thing.

I have really enjoyed your podcasts. Thank you for taking time to share each week. Also, thanks for being real and the giggles at the end of the podcast today! 🙂 I recently read your book Simply Tuesday (or listened to it on Audible while walking), and was so excited to have your podcast to listen to when I finished your book. I have a heart and desire to start a blog and allow the things Christ has taught me through my journey of life to inspire and help others as they step through their lives. Your writing has inspired me and I got home from walking one day and couldn’t do another thing until I wrote down an idea for a post. Thank you for your story, your willingness to share and your heart for God. Have a wonderful day!!

This was so timely for me. I read this at work yesterday when I had an overwhelming to do list and knew I had to leave early for a Dr. appt. Not knowing where to start, I chose avoidance and read your blog. It was just what I needed. I had already made a list, so one by one I picked one thing and plowed ahead. When it was time to leave, I’d gotten everything done that absolutely had to be done and felt so much better. Thank you! I’m a big list maker, but never thought of just writing one thing at a time on there-even though I find myself telling people all the time to just deal with one thing at a time. Guess I needed someone to tell me to write that one thing down!

Hey Emily ~ so enjoyable to listen in! You are coming to speak at our church next Spring (Mission Hills in San Marcos, CA) and I can hardly wait for our women to hear from you! Having read several of your books in the past, I really admire and resonate with your work and your style. By the way, your voice is very soothing too. Just wanted to say hi and tell you how much I am looking forward to meeting you! Praying for God’s direction for our conference….and I loved the series of questions you asked a the end of today’s reading…..mmm something to ponder…how might God be leading our women to “be where they are”.

Oh so fun! I just had a talk with Jamin the other day about our time together in the spring. I’m grateful for the opportunity and look forward to meeting you there. Thanks for your kind words!

Parts of your podcasts often end up in my journal, and today I’m rereading my entry from this day (which I only listened to a couple months ago). You said “I’m learning how to make peace with the waves, learning how to bring peace with me into the chaos rather than trying to calm the chaos in order to find peace,” and I’m struck by the word BRING. It means that I already have peace with me through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit within me. I just have to find it within myself, within Him, and hold onto it. I don’t have to conjure it or find it nebulously in the world. It’s already mine. So encouraging and comforting!

    Hi Emily,

I just wanted to say please continue to share because you have no idea how much peace and joy your words bring me. I am so hard on myself but when I listen to your podcasts I feel Gods love and closeness so much more. Thank you for being you and letting God speak through you.

    Lydia
